Dr. Joseph Neimat

Joseph Neimat grew up in the Washington DC area. He studied at Dartmouth College and Duke University. Dr. Neimat performed his residency in Neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a fellowship in Neuromodulation surgery at the University of Toronto.


Dr Neimat served as Director of Epilepsy and was a founding member of the Institute for Surgery and Engineering at Vanderbilt University. In 2016 Dr. Neimat transitioned to the University of Louisville where he serves as Chairman of Neurological Surgery. His clinical interests include the surgical treatment of movement disorders, the treatment of epilepsy, novel therapies for disorders of mood and behavior, and the multi-modality treatment of complex pain.


Dr. Neimat additionally runs a collaborative research lab exploring cognitive and emotional processing in cortical and subcortical structures. The lab uses the opportunity of DBS and epilepsy surgeries, to evaluate the response of neuronal ensembles to novel stimuli that task cognitive and emotional processing.


Dr. Neimat has served on the Board of Directors for the American and World Societies for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ASSFN and WSSFN). He is the immediate Past - President of the ASSFN.
